Teaser for SYFY’s new Chucky series brings us back to the original Chucky universe

I have quite the love/hate relationship with the Child’s Play films. In concept, I think the idea is amazing and on the whole I have this idea of liking them. However, whenever I watch an individual movie I’m left a little disappointed, especially when it comes to any of the new films. Still, I hold out hope that the next revival will make Chucky truly great.

Maybe TV is the spot where that will happen. SyFy has dropped the first look teaser for their new seriesChucky. The show takes place in the original universe that Child’s Play creator Don Mancini built over the decades through each film and has surprisingly deep lore. That is separate from the rebooted Child’s Play universe that MGM kicked off without Mancini. IP rights are weird and they’ve resulted in a universe where we have two separate horror movie franchises starring the same killer doll.

Rumors suggest that since this is the same timeline as the previous films Chucky’s original voice actor, Brad Dourif, will return as well. He’ll be voicing a new Chucky doll who turns up at a yard sale in an idyllic American town. Things don’t go well from there, obviously, and the show’s description says that “enemies and allies from Chucky’s past threaten to expose the truth behind the killings, as well as the demon doll’s untold origins as a seemingly ordinary child who somehow became this notorious monster.”

There’s some meaty Chucky lore to chew into if you’re into that kind of thing.

Chucky will premiere sometime next year on SyFy and USA.
