Universal picks up Luc Besson’s next sci-fi thriller

So, it’s awesome that Luc Besson is making a return to sci-fi. After years of waiting for something in the vein of The Fifth Element or The Professional, Besson is coming out with not one, but two sci-fi films. His latest, Lockout, we reported on last week and the trailer to that looks badass. Now there’s another Besson-directed/written film in the works starring Angelina Jolie. The film had gone without a distributer for a while until recently when Universal picked it up. That’s a good sign, right?

The untitled film is said to be a “large-scale dramatic thriller” that is based more in realistic scientific roots. So, I’m guessing that means no floating cruise ships or betentacled alien opera singers. If I had to guess, it’s probably more like his upcoming film, Lockout, which is decidedly more realistic and gritty than the highly saturated The Fifth Element. Let’s just hope Besson still has what it takes after all these years to produce as entertaining and imaginative a movie as seen in his earlier work.
