Zack Snyder is in the news a lot these days, with his recut Justice League dominating much of the public perception of the filmmaker in the years since its original 2017 release. Dominating so much that you’d be forgiven for forgetting about Army of the Dead, the zombie film Snyder directed for Netflix, which now has a confirmed date of May 21, 2021.
Featuring a cast stacked with Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, Omari Hardwick, Ana De La Reguera, Theo Rossi, Nora Arnezeder, and Hiroyuki Sanada, Army of the Dead is sounding like the sort of old-fashioned blood-and-guts undeadfest that we were growing so tired of back when The Walking Dead was on every billboard. Now? Well, maybe it’s a nice refresh from all the superheroes? Time, it would seem, is a flat circle.
Army of the Dead, like all things, hit a bit of a pandemic-induced snag after being set for a winter release, but it sounds as if the carnage is nearly underway. Set in a Las Vegas locked down by, well, zombies, the virus and pandemonium is contained to the iconic gambling metropolis for sometime. What happens in Vegas, evidently, stays in Vegas. But at the behest of a casino owner looking to recover his cash funds from the quarantined city, a crew of mercenaries are hired to go in and liberate the money from the decaying vaults of the abandoned casino. It sounds, quite frankly, like a riot.
Snyder directs and co-write the script with Shay Hatten (John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum) and Joby Harold (Obi-Wan Kenobi). Whether or not Zack Snyder’s Justice League makes the four-hour splash it hopes to next month, fans can look forward to even more grit and gumption when Army of the Dead hit its May date on Netflix.
