Argylle scores another number one box office finish in the worst Super Bowl weekend ever

Argylle

Nobody went to the movies this past weekend. With Super Bowl LVIII taking place and being a ridiculously close game, people were way too preoccupied with following Taylor Swift around than seeing anything at the theaters. This is probably how Argylle retained its number-one spot while continuing to bomb yet again.

Yes, Matthew Vaughn’s Argylle has the distinction of consecutive top finishes while also having one of the worst second-week dropoffs ever. Falling 63%, the movie only earned $6.5 million at the domestic box office. Over the past week, the film has not done much better internationally and has only accumulated about $60 million worldwide. This is off of a budget of around $200-250 million, mind you.

In second came Zelda Williams’ directorial debut Lisa Frankenstein. While the film is reportedly just okay, I think the reason it barely made a splash is because of the Super Bowl. Without that “distraction” happening, more people would have gone and helped it get past a $3.8 million opener. Still, the budget for the movie is only around $13 million, so the next few weeks are likely to turn the project profitable.

Going further down the list is honestly quite depressing. As Variety put it, this was the worst Super Bowl weekend at the box office in history, so it shouldn’t be surprising to see that the top 10 films combined failed to generate even $30 million. The Beekeeper took third with $3.4 million, The Chosen Season Four: Episodes 1-3 added another $3.15 million in fourth, and Wonka kept its streak going with $3.12 million in fifth.

Here are the top 10 films for the weekend of February 9-11, 2024. All totals listed are domestic:

  1. Argylle – $6.5 million
  2. Lisa Frankenstein – $3.8 million
  3. The Beekeeper – $3.4 million
  4. The Chosen Season Four: Episodes 1-3 – $3.15 million
  5. Wonka – $3.12 million
  6. Migration – $3 million
  7. Anyone But You – $2.7 million
  8. Mean Girls – $1.9 million
  9. American Fiction – $1.3 million
  10. Poor Things – $1.1 million
